Senior Software Development Manager in Austin, Texas

Amazon Fulfillment Technologies (AFT) – Compliance Technology team builds and operates the software, and processes that run the global network of fulfillment centers, which move billions of units of inventory and ensures customers get what they want as promised, compliantly. With the scale and growth of Amazon, our technology teams are beginning to build large scale distributed systems, Big Data systems, Rules Engine, Machine Learning Models and Risk Models to keep our customers and environment safe. We are forming new teams in Austin, TX and Seattle, WA.

We are looking for a leader to build a high performing organization of numerous Leaders/Sr. Managers leading multiple two-pizza teams, hire leaders (SDMs, SDE IIIs) and lead the technical direction of mission critical applications for millions of AB customers. As a leader of this organization, you will have the end-to-end ownership of the product(s), including the front-end application(s) as well as the backend services supporting the application. You will regularly interact with executive leadership and work with business teams to define product strategy, develop the product development roadmap, technology architecture and execution. As a leader of leaders, you’ll need to build, manage, and mentor multiple engineering teams towards achieving a focused mission. You’ll work in a fast paced environment and will be required to lead not only at the strategic level, but also tactically day-to-day by diving deeply into business and technical domains. As a multi-discipline leader, the buck will stop with you.

The role requires you to be able to manage the overall software development life-cycle which includes the following responsibilities:

  • Manage your group of engineers and managers into a highly performing engineering organization.

  • Define and drive your long term product strategy based on your relationships with key customers and technology partners.

  • Architect and deliver Amazon's next-generation product classification technologies to help solve Amazon unique retail challenges.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience.

  • 10+ years of experience managing multiple teams in software development efforts in distributed systems and/or developing large scale mobile applications utilizing Agile methodologies (SCRUM a plus).

  • 6+ years experience professionally developing software in an Object Oriented Programming (OOP) language like Java, C++, C# or Scala Experience building and developing strong technical teams

  • Experience developing software development managers/technical leads

  • Experience in full stack - front end web development environments to back end systems

  • Experience in shipping multiple generations of the same product, and learning from each major release

  • Experience in managing multiple charters, multiple teams and being a leader of leaders.

  • Deep, hands-on technical expertise in high scale, service-oriented architectures

  • Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations

  • Clear, professional communication skills able to contribute to team discussions, knowing when to contribute, when to listen, and when to ask questions

  • Experience building decoupled systems with rich user experience that can be built on a variety of platforms (mobile preferred) with a correspondingly complex backend with rich data services and business logic.

  • Proactively and continually improve their level of knowledge about Amazon’s business and relevant technologies, and use this knowledge to deliver high quality, accurate software deliverables
