Job Description

Shell Trading & Supply business activity is regulated in key markets by bodies such as the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), as well as other entities that have overlapping jurisdictions and that define regulations and rules that can be interpreted differently depending on the nature and size of the business conducted. These regulations have changed substantially over recent years, and this trend is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.

This regulatory context requires preventative and active monitoring of trading patterns and behaviors to ensure that no intended or unintended market manipulation occurs. This role is part of the team responsible for ensuring Shell has a strong, continually improving compliance program in place to fulfill these regulatory requirements and protect our license to operate.

Shell Trading & Supply has implemented a robust Compliance Program to support our regulatory requirements, including transactions and business communications monitoring & surveillance (M&S). The Compliance M&S Analyst role is responsible for identifying, researching, and resolving potential compliance risks, ensuring appropriate escalation if necessary.

Job duties include:

  • Reviewing, prioritizing and analyzing Trade Monitoring alerts

  • Reviewing, prioritizing and analyzing Business Communications based alerts

  • Reviewing, prioritizing and analyzing External Market Commentary based alerts

  • Identifying potential areas of risk for further inquiry or escalation

  • Proposing and testing improvements to trade monitoring tools

  • Proposing and testing changes to business communication monitoring key words and phrases

  • Keeping team and management informed of relevant CFTC, FERC, and Exchange (CME, ICE) enforcement actions and market manipulation rule changes

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university (or equivalent work experience)

  • Experience in a trading, compliance, risk control, or trading support role

  • Excellent knowledge of North American physical/financial energy markets required

  • Knowledge of North American physical/financial crude oil and refined products markets preferred

  • Strong understanding of trading instruments, trading strategies, and risk concepts

  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills including the ability to interact with all levels of staff and management

  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem solving and communications skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Team-oriented with the ability to work independently

  • Must be proficient with MS Excel, with macro/scripting skills a plus

  • Proficiency with Spotfire or comparable applications is preferred
