An Energy Client Manager manages client relationships within the Energy Division of BBVA’s Corporate and Investment Bank. The Client Manager’s primary responsibility is to develop, market, deliver, and maintain a wide range of banking products and services for our U.S. clients engaged in the upstream, midstream, downstream, OFS and utilities businesses. The Client Manager coordinates closely with product partners, the Energy Risk team and Energy Division analysts to execute various aspects of transactions, including new business proposals, legal documentation, and operational activities.

Major/Essential Job Duties:

Marketing and Deal Execution

  • Meet revenue and profit goals by executing banking transactions including loans and, by effectively collaborating with product partners, other products including, but not limited to rates, capital markets, FX and transactional banking products

  • Generate, qualify, develop and convert prospective clients

  • Appraisal of opportunities from a risk, structural and profit perspective

  • Collaborate with Loan Syndication & Sales, Risk and other internal partners to pitch and manage agented deals

  • Forming, communicating and executing a client strategy for each relationship

Risk/Reward Analysis and Decisions

  • Direct the preparation of New Business Committee (“NBC”) and US Business Committee (“USBC”) packages for approval, including profitability analysis and client strategy

  • Present requests to NBC and USBC

  • Collaborate with LS&S, Rates, FX, TM, WMG and other groups as appropriate to determine the Group Risk Policy

  • Articulate the commercial proposition to CIB Credit Committee

  • Legal documentation review and reconciliation

Internal Coordination and Problem Solving

  • Call and lead joint planning meetings with global product partners

  • Respond and provide information to audit and regulatory authorities in connection with loan review

  • Direct the resolution of clients’ administrative and operational issues by coordinating with Business Development, Risk, BRS, LD&FC, LMS, Middle Office, and other Operational departments

Information management and reporting

  • Relationship profitability maintenance and monitoring

  • Client forecasting and other reporting

  • Direct credit file management and preparation for audits and exams


Technical Skills:

  • Bachelors degree, preferably in Finance, Economics or Accounting, with strong performance and from a leading university

  • Master’s degree preferred

  • Fluent in English; working knowledge of Spanish is desirable

  • Strong analytical and financial modeling skills

  • Strong energy industry knowledge

  • Advanced computer skills, particularly in Excel and PowerPoint

  • Understanding of the economy and markets

  • Credit or other analytical training with energy clients viewed as a positive

Performance Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Negotiation skills and ability to deal directly with clients at the CEO, CFO and Treasury levels

  • Teamwork strengths and ability to coordinate with people internally across various departments (Risk, LD&FC, product partners and executive management)
