The Registered Nurse will provide care to emergent patient utilizing assessment, intervention, outcomes and evaluation of human responses to perceived, actual or potential, sudden or urgent, physical or psychosocial problems that are primarily episodic or acute while assigned to the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), within Medical Care Line at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, TX. The Registered Nurse duties will include documenting observations, assessments, and changes in patient's condition; collaborating with health team members to facilitate positive patient care outcomes; providing a full range of nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavior problems; and accountable for meeting and maintaining the qualification standards and functional statements of assigned grade. Our facility is seeking individuals who possess good organizational skills which enable completion of work, a demonstrated ability to assume leadership in a patient centered program, and the ability to establish effective communication with patients, families, visitors and members of the interdisciplinary team. The incumbent will be a Staff Nurse on the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU).
- Demonstrate competence in patient assessment for individuals with constantly changing conditions and complex diagnoses requiring specialized nursing care.
- Knowledge and ability to recognize life-threatening arrhythmias and respond accordingly.
- Demonstrate the ability to learn numerous skills in operating complex equipment necessary for the efficient and effective care of the patients.
- Ability to accurately perform, document, and evaluate nursing care interventions and patient responses at a rapid pace.
- Ability to triage and time manage patient care in a rapid turn-around and high procedure unit.
- Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members.
- Maintain proper supplies of medical equipment.

Tour of Duty: Sunday - Sunday, 12 hour and 8 hour shifts, 7:30 am - 8:00 pm; 7:30 am - 4:00 pm; 11:30 am - 8:00 pm; 3:30 pm - 12 am; 7:30 pm - 8:00 am; 11:30 am - Midnight; Midnight - 8:00 am, may include rotation to other tours; will include rotation on weekends and holidays. Alternate work schedule may be available.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

- Registration Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The RN must maintain a current, full active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with the VA
- Educational requirements can be met as follows:
(1) Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); or b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR
(2) In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
- 5 to 7 years of recent critical care experience preferred; Medical ICU experience preferred.
- 2 to 4 years of recent charge nurse experience in an ICU setting preferred

Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
