University of Texas Health Science Center Utilities Plant Operator-Intermediate in San Antonio, Texas
High school diploma or GED with five (5) years experience in the operation and repair of utility equipment.
Supervise operations, maintenance, repairs, and projects in the Energy Plant. Maintain most efficient use of utilities to manufacture steam and chilled water for use at the UTHSC, University Hospital and Audie Murphy VA Hospital. To ensure the efficient generation of steam and chilled water. Maintain the equipment and facilities of the Energy Plant. Have excellent problem solving and communication skills. Provide leadership and direct activities of subordinates to ensure good time management of labor and resources. Ensure safety and well being of personnel.
Forecast chilled water and steam load requirements based on seasons, time of day, and weather conditions. Adjust, start or stop plant equipment to maintain efficient production while minimizing utility costs. Ensure that all equipment history records, equipment, logs, chemical inventories and thermal billing database information is entered every shift. Perform relief rounds of energy plant to ensure proper operation of plant equipment and systems to provide an uninterupted flow of steam and chilled water to customers during shift change-over. Maintain equipment, facilities and systems in assigned area of responsibility. Become subject matter expert on equipment and systems specific to assigned area. Perform equipment rounds to determine status of plant equipment..Supervise personnel on assigned shift to ensure proper use of time and materials. Provide leadership and ensure that all Federal, State, Local laws and regulations are observed.

Ensure that weekly biocide treatment and testing is performed on condenser water system and documented. Make entries into control room log book showing any discrepancies in plant equipment or systems, document repairs and show personnel in the plant. Communicate with supervisor, relieving shift, and prior shift on equipment status, needed supplies, tools or resources.Train subordinates using job manual specific to position. Encourage employees to develop skills and abilities that will help them progress in their career.

Perform chemical analysis of plant water systems. Ensure all tests are completed and parameters are normal. Determine causes of anomalies and repair or adjust system feed to correct.
