POWER Engineers, Inc. is seeking a Western Biology Department Manager for our Environmental Division.
Roles and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising and managing projects in the Western Biology Department to ensure that work is executed on time, within budget and in accordance with clients’ requirements and scope of work. The Department Manager is responsible for the overall strategic direction and management of biological services including: developing and expanding market segments through services, client management and business development, profit/loss management, personnel resource management, and technical oversight.
The Department Manager will oversee the preparation of proposals and cost estimates provided to clients to ensure proper scoping of services, availability of manpower and pricing to achieve desired profitability. Additionally, this manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Western Biology Department including staff training, development and performance review, utilization of equipment and facilities, safety oversight, quality of services and work product, timely delivery of services and deliverables, and adherence to company policies and procedures. In addition to the Department Manager duties this position will also fulfill project management responsibilities. As a Project Manager you will support and help build environmental project team focused on transmission lines, renewable energy, pipelines, environmental surveys, NEPA analyses, and permitting services. The candidate should have an established and successful history of managing infrastructure permitting project with responsibilities that have included developing proposals and cost estimates, executing projects, developing strategic plans for new business and recruitment and hiring of key personnel to support the growth of the team.
Essential Role and Responsibilities
Responsible for preparation of proposals and cost estimates with varying degrees of complexity
Prepare and execute the department annual business plan for the Western Biology Department territory
Oversee and manage the success of the key department metrics of revenue growth, staff chargeability, project billing and collections, and project profitability
Develop understanding and be aware of project-related risk. Be familiar project risk(s) and how to mitigate risk for the Company. Be familiar with Company risk policies
Lead safety efforts for team and ensure team follows safety rules and guidelines. Responsible for creating and modeling a safe work environment; demonstrates safety practices. Promote pre-task planning for all projects
Promote continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects. Monitor quality standards and practices
Plan for and participate in business development activities to identify, develop, win, and execute project opportunities and build and maintain client relationships
Model a strong work ethic and commitment to POWER’s culture
Demonstrate strong leadership skills and the ability to lead by example
B.S. in Biology, Ecology, or related field
Fifteen (15) or more years’ experience in environmental/biological consulting in utility or energy industry, to include transmission, renewables, power generation and/or natural gas transmission experience
Experience managing staff, projecting workloads and scheduling work
Strong analytical and problem solving skills
Attention to detail and commitment to quality and professionalism
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Experience with MS Project, GIS, and document production software
Understanding of NEPA and federal lands permitting process
A demonstrated technical competence and project experience in natural resource fields applicable to industrial siting and licensing or environmental permitting projects
An M.S. in biology, ecology or related field is preferred
Certification or licensure in field of expertise. CWB, PWS, PMP or other professional designation preferred
Familiarity with Oracle software is a plus
