Position Information

Position Summary

The Controls Technician performs a variety of moderately complex semi-skilled duties to assist in the installation, inspection, testing and repair of pneumatic, electric and electronic control equipment.

This position is located at Rice University in a relatively new building the BRC, which is equipped with a sophisticated, state of-the-art interactive HVAC systems. It is essential the Controls Technician is fully capability to understand these systems to ensure the efficient operation of HVAC controls and campus energy management system (EMS) to meet both comfort and conservation requirements. This person must understand and possess the capabilities to install, troubleshoot and repair refrigeration systems of all types thus the person must be adept at quickly learning how to properly operate, maintain and calibrate these complex systems. It is imperative the incumbent practices safe work habits at all times for the safety of self and co-workers including the use of tools and protective equipment and follow department and university safety rules.

The Controls Technician position requires on-call work on a rotating basis for the purpose of responding to call-out work after hours and on weekends.

Education Required

HS Diploma or equivalent

Substitution for Education Requirement

Experience may not be substituted for the education requirement.

Education Preferred

College coursework in controls, electronics, mechanical or refrigeration.

Type of Experience

Experience with a combination of formal training and hands-on experience in HVAC controls, energy management systems, metering devices (temperature, pressure, flow and electrical), instrumentation (calibration of 4-20ma current loops, RTDs, flow and pressure transmitters), electronic and pneumatic process control.

Substitution for Experience Requirement

Education may not be substituted for the experience requirement.

Experience Preferred

Five years of experience in related field.

License/Certification Required

Refrigerant Transition & Recovery Certification and/or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of being hired.

License/Certification Preferred

Texas State Air Conditioning License

Skills Required
  • Above average knowledge of electrical and / or pneumatic prints.

  • Ability to follow and give directions.

  • Interpersonal skills.

  • Proficient communication skills both oral and written.

Skills Preferred
  • Ability to make electronic repairs down to the component level.

  • Good technical skills and analytical ability is essential.

  • Knowledge of electric circuitry and pneumatic controls.

Internal / External Contacts

Internal: other HVAC craftsmen on campus and other crafts; interfacing with students and other BRC / Rice staff.

External: vendors, contractors and service representatives.

Physical Demands
  • Position requires moderate to heavy physical activity.

  • Must be able to bend, stoop, climb, stand / walk for extended periods of time .

  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment loads up to 50 lbs.

  • Must use stairs and ladders frequently.

  • Ability to walk through tunnels and climb over piping and equipment.

  • Must use power tools and equipment.

Working Conditions
  • This position is considered essential during a campus emergency.

  • The incumbent in this position is expected to report to the BRC, provide the essential services designated and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency.

  • This may include working in flood or storm conditions to repair or restore damaged facilities and distribution systems.

  • Work requires exposure to high pressure boilers and steam piping, high voltage electrical systems, rotating equipment, and other potentially dangerous equipment.

  • Extended hours and call-outs will be necessary when problems develop that require special attention.

  • Modified work schedule may also be required.

  • Will be “on call” on a regular schedule.

  • Must frequently work in confined spaces such as mechanical rooms which may not be air conditioned or heated; dusty, dirty and wet conditions on occasion.

  • Hearing protection, safety glasses and steel-toed shoes may be required as deemed necessary for safety in various areas in BRC facilities.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mandatory overtime and weekends, as needed. Schedule may be adjusted to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday after six months of training.

Job Duty Name: Essential Functions

Description of Job Duty: - Completes complex and non-complex work requests for the installation, inspection, testing and repair of pneumatic, electrical and electronic control equipment related to air conditioning, fume hood and exhaust systems accurately documenting work performed. - Finds and implements measures to fully utilize and improve existing systems to assure the most efficient overall campus energy utilization. - Performs a daily review of the system, troubleshoots and ensures necessary changes are made in programming and calibration to gain proper operation of controls and instrumentation. - Leads or instructs others in proper system review. - Identifies energy conservation measures (ECMs) throughout the campus by making visual inspections and identifying deficiencies. - Assists with troubleshooting and analysis to obtain maximum reliability and efficiency. - Performs all other duties as assigned.
