Pattern Energy is excited to hire our summer 2018 Interns! Pattern’s Summer Internship Program gives undergraduate and graduate students hands-on experience to develop technical skills, as well as a better understanding of the renewable industry. This internship program will run for approximately 10-12 weeks and include a formal welcome, mentorship opportunities, and executive exposure. This is one way that Pattern Energy supports the larger renewable community and invests in the next generation of great minds.

The Market Operations team is seeking an intern to support the group in enhancing our capabilities in power market data analysis and intelligence. The role will require the Intern to be an integral member of the Market Operations and Energy Analytics team and to collaborate with other teams including Asset Management, Power Marketing & Transmission, Engineering, and Field Operations. This internship will provide the opportunity to gain a basic knowledge and understanding of the power industry market structure and its key marcroeconomic drivers, especially as it relates to wind generation. This position will include macroeconomic analysis, financial analysis and modeling, data management and analysis, research and investigation, and development of tools.

The Intern will investigate macro power market trends and drivers for Pattern’s existing markets and new markets where Pattern will be operating in the future. In addition, the role will require organization and manipulation of large amounts of data and integration of the data into Pattern data systems and tools.

Key Accountabilities

  • Identify macroeconomic trends and drivers of power markets where Pattern currently operates or will operate in the future

  • Integrate data from relevant macroeconomic drivers into internal data systems and tools

  • Analyze the impact of drivers on Pattern’s assets and communicate impacts to Management

  • Investigate how to integrate data from ERCOT, CAISO, and other grid operators into Pattern’s internal data systems and tools

  • Streamline process to identify new market entrants in markets where Pattern operates

  • Collaborate with Energy Analytics and Transmission groups to mitigate risk of new entrants

  • Support Market Operations in developing tools or processes to mitigate congestion including the use of congestion revenue rights (CRRs)

  • Develop process to monitor and manage the economic offers of market participants in ERCOT

  • Perform general research and other analysis or projects as required

  • Complete an internship presentation at the end of the term

Experience/Qualifications/Education Required

  • Working towards a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Business or Economics, having completed 3 years of relevant course work

  • Familiarity of power generation industry, SQL, statistics, and databasing helpful but not required

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to express ideas effectively and fluently

  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment where teamwork and independent work ethic are essential

  • Ability to synthesize and organize large amounts of data

  • Ability to organize time well and set proper priorities

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft products including Excel and PowerPoint

This position will commence in late May/early June through August 2018.
