Role Summary:

Baker Hughes, a GE company has an opening for a Drill Bits Product Development Engineer in The Woodlands, TX. Baker Hughes, a GE company, Drill Bit Technology Group is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer as part of the Product Development team. This team member will be actively participating in design, analysis, and development of new technologies that will be incorporated in future product offerings from Baker Hughes, a GE company.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Works in a Mechanical Engineering discipline in product development and R&D.

  • Develop and meet project plan timelines to design, test and evaluate the next generation of products.

  • Interface with Engineering, Research, Marketing and Manufacturing to develop and transfer technology.

  • Identify and work on customer focused issues

  • Drives standardization of manufacturing and repair methods, to optimize cost point and performance.

  • Review and submit patents and technical papers.

  • Under minimal supervision, plans, conducts and supervises assignments. Reviews progress and evaluates results.

  • Recommends and implements procedure changes to streamline process and improve data analysis provided to end customers.

  • Runs and supports complex system projects for downhole tools with strong tie to various drilling applications.

  • Handles special projects, as assigned and personally identified.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5+ years of mechanical design and project engineering experience or a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 3+ years of mechanical design and project engineering experience.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and experience with mechanical systems

  • Desire to dive in to details to push boundaries of technology.

  • Strong problem-solving and project management skills

  • Strong verbal and technical report writing communication skills

  • Must be action oriented, ethical in value, and customer focused with a drive for results.

  • Ability to manage time, makes quality decisions, and manage and measure work.

  • Successful candidate will be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship.

  • Travel up to 20%

Desired Characteristics:

  • Proficient in working with 3D CAD design systems (ex: Unigraphics & Teamcenter)

  • Proficient with FEA packages

  • Experience with complex mechanical systems or dynamic systems a plus.

  • Drill Bits (Tricone or PDC) expertise a plus

  • Six Sigma – Green Belt preferred
